Target Intellectually disabled infants and younger and older children in the kindergarten, elementary, lower secondary, and upper secondary divisions. (Those with problems having school lunches and looking forward to their lunch times. Lunch menus for 3 days are posted on the door of the school lunchroom so that everyone can see them.)
Disability category mentally challenged
Teaching units / Applicable scenes special activities
Specific purposes To enable infants and younger and older children to
1. check the lunch menus and look forward to their school lunches
2. enjoy their school lunches
3. eat their favorite menu items as a source of hard work and try hard to eat even their least favorite menu items.
4. This teaching material can be used to exchange food-related information between teachers and parents.
Considerations for disability characteristics Teachers support the infants and younger and older children in a step-by-step manner, according to each child’s situation. To make it easier for them to associate the menu with school lunches, post the menu on the lunchroom door. Photograph the menu items actually served. Different children will be interested in different menus from among the three menus presented (yesterday, today, and tomorrow) and will check the menus at different times of the day; therefore, the lunch menus remain posted on the door.
Expected effects and results • Children could spend school days enjoying their school lunches.
• Posting up menus in advance helped to eliminate the children’s anxiety: “What will I eat for today’s lunch?”
• Children were able to know which days were the ones when there were no school lunches.
How to use 1. All menu items are not necessarily photographed, as long as the main dish is included. Create a photo card of each new menu item and add it to the collection of cards.
2. At lunch time, photograph the lunch to create a photo card, and attach the card to today’s lunch menu.
3. Attach Velcro tape to the back of the photo card to make it easy to handle.
4. To stop the children being confused, create and post a card for days on which there is no school lunch: “No school lunch,” or “School lunches for the first term are over. They will begin in September.”
