Target |
Elementary school level children with physical/motor disabilities (elementary, junior high and senior high school level) |
---|---|
Disability category | physically challenged |
Teaching units / Applicable scenes | activities for independent living teaching and learning tools, auxiliary aids |
Specific purposes |
・A plastic bottle filled with a small amount of water is passed from hand to hand and used in a variety of fun, daily exercises that allow for easily-learned hand development. ・By having children put the soles of their feet on the floor, stretching their spine and performing hand exercises, this helps them develop daily, bit by bit the ability to use their hands and feet separately. ・Having children perform these exercises together in a group creates a fun atmosphere and cultivates social skills. |
Considerations for disability characteristics |
・Gather a variety of plastic bottles in different shapes and sizes to allow children to find one that suits them. ・Fill the children's plastic bottles with one to two centimeters of water and have them move the water around, which should be an easy task for even children with physical/motor disabilities. |
Expected effects and results |
・These brief but ongoing exercises are fun and provide an easy way to teach hand development. ・Children are able to adjust the exercises to their own physical ability. ・Performing these exercises together with other children creates a sense of fun. |
How to use |
・Second and third graders have small hands, and it was found that slim 300mL plastic bottles were easier to move around than 500mL bottles. ・For children who have trouble focusing their strength, it was found that a small soy sauce container or small plastic bottle for young children were easier to handle. ・Because an empty plastic bottle provides no resistance, it is a good idea to add a small amount of water. ・A variety of bottle-to-hand methods should be used. ・Commands are given in groups of ten and move clockwise starting with the class helper for the day. |
