・Young children who have a vague understanding of "last week," "next week," "day after tomorrow," etc.
Disability category mentally challenged autism
Teaching units / Applicable scenes activities for independent living instruction for living skills pre-school education
Specific purposes ・Develop and understanding of "one week," "this week," "next week" and other concepts via such activities as lining up date cards and "Today" cards, and then matching these sets of cards.
Considerations for disability characteristics ・For the child in this example, the "Today" cards were made to look like a train, which he likes, and by connecting the "Today" cards to correspond with the date cards, an understanding of the link between them was reinforced.
・Calendars for "This Week" and "Next Week" were lined up and daily activities discussed with the child to help him conceptualize the flow of one week.
Expected effects and results ・With confirmation and reinforcement provided by the teacher, the child was able to match the date cards one by one with the days of the week.
・Using "Today" as the starting point, the child put "Yesterday," "Tomorrow," and "Day After Tomorrow" in the right order and lined up the calendars for "This Week" and "Next Week" while discussing daily activities.
How to use 1. With help from the teacher, the child reads the numbers on the date cards for this week while putting them in place.
2. The child affixes the "Today" train to the spot for today's date.
Next, he or she affixes the "Yesterday," "Tomorrow" and "Day After Tomorrow" train cars.
3. The teacher discusses daily activities that the child did "Yesterday" or will do "Tomorrow," etc.
