Disability category | mentally challenged |
Teaching units / Applicable scenes | teaching and learning tools, auxiliary aids |
Specific purposes |
To enable children to: --complete a puzzle by carefully studying the pictures and shapes, and touching the pieces --firmly hold a tab on the surface of a puzzle piece with the fingers, and put the piece in place --sit at a desk and complete a task |
Considerations for disability characteristics |
The puzzles depict animals or vehicles, which are attractive to children of this age group. The puzzle pieces can be easily identified by color and shape. Each piece has a tab to make it easy to pick up and hold. The pieces are put together to produce three-dimensional objects, making the images easily recognizable. The puzzles have a wooden texture, pleasant and interesting to the touch. |
Expected effects and results |
As children perform the task, their concentration and motivation to complete the task increase. Children develop the ability to identify pieces by matching pictures and shapes one by one. The feel of putting puzzle pieces in place gives a sense of accomplishment, especially upon completion. |
How to use |
Select a puzzle that interests the child (animals, vehicles, etc.). Depending on the level of disability, hand puzzle pieces to a child one by one for a one-to-one correspondence, or let him/her select his/her favorite one from two pieces to increase his/her motivation. Pieces should be identified either by the coloring or shape, depending on the purpose. If a child has difficulty in identifying pieces, he/she can move them around on the board, and place them in a tactile manner, using the ‘click’ of proper connection as a guide. |
