Target Children with intellectual disability in the Elementary, Lower Secondary, and Upper Secondary Departments
(Children who would benefit from confirming their personal activity schedule for the day, and reflecting on the activities they have performed)
6 to 17 year olds
Disability category mentally challenged developmental disabilities
Teaching units / Applicable scenes Japanese instruction for living skills
Specific purposes To enable children to:
--confirm their personal activity schedule for the day
--express their emotions and experiences in words and action
--share their emotions and experiences with their family and teacher
Considerations for disability characteristics “A’s Memo” employs a format already used by children as a personal record of daily activities.
The memo has additional fields, which the children themselves check, so that each can keep a record of his/her activities and reflections.
Expected effects and results Children can:
--write short sentences about what they worked hard to do and enjoyed in the day
--use A’s Memo to share their experiences with their family and teacher
--have an increased opportunity to express and share emotions, using illustrations of facial expressions, and have an increased variety of illustrations.
How to use (1) Checking the personal activity schedule
Take the “A’s Memo” sheet from the clear file folder.
Look at the schedule and record learning activities for the day.
When done, have the sheet checked by the teacher, and insert it into the binder.
(2) Expressing emotions and experiences in words and action
After completing each activity, check the sheet. (Illustrate sensed emotions using facial expressions, and reflect on them.)
Take the binder home and write a review of the day.
(3) Sharing emotions and experiences with the family and teacher
Bring the binder to school.
Show the review to the teacher, and discuss with him/her the learning activities and review.
Improvement of the teaching material: with the binder, it is possible to collate the A’s Memo sheets, and take them to and from home.
Related teaching materials and information An A5 ring binder is used, so it can be easily carried. A commercially available planner can be used when the schedule check is changed from a daily to a weekly or monthly check.
