Name of teaching material
Target | Children with intellectual disability (Elementary, Lower Secondary, and Upper Secondary Departments: 6 to 17 year olds) |
---|---|
Disability category | mentally challenged |
Teaching units / Applicable scenes | instruction for living skills |
Specific purposes |
Enable children to: --understand their emotions --develop the ability to regulate their emotions |
Considerations for disability characteristics |
The teaching material was designed to enable children who get easily excited, or have difficulty in regulating their emotions when excited, to recognize that they are excited and calm down without being reprimanded by the teacher. The level of excitement is quantified and color coded to make the teaching material easy to understand visually. |
Expected effects and results | With the check sheet attached to the surface of the desk, the children can move the arrow, recognize their emotions, and calm themselves down. When they do not have the sheet nearby, they can say, “I am in such-and-such a color zone.” They use the sheet regularly. |
How to use |
The sheet has a velcro patch next to each number. Children attach an arrow sheet to the velcro to record the level of excitement. The red zone (at the top of the sheet) indicates that the child is excited, and the blue zone (at the bottom of the sheet) indicates that he/she is calm. Teach children to attach the arrow sheet by themselves and regulate their emotions. When the arrow sheet is in the blue zone, the teacher warmly praises the child and helps him/her to understand, “This is good!”, and to develop confidence. When the child is restless, show options and help him/her consider what to do. |
