Name of teaching material
Target |
Fourth grade of the Elementary Department (9 year olds) Children with well-defined interests, who like to perform favorite activities independently, and like trains. |
---|---|
Disability category | mentally challenged autism |
Teaching units / Applicable scenes | activities for independent living |
Specific purposes | Children are able to wait until their turn comes when performing an activity. |
Considerations for disability characteristics | Boxes with pictures of trains, favorites of the target children, are prepared, with white circles indicating holes into which toothpicks with pictures of train cars should be inserted. |
Expected effects and results |
Passing the ‘train-car’ toothpick holder back and forth, the teacher said, “It’s your turn. It’s my turn.”, and the child inserted toothpicks into the hole in his/her proper turn. Subsequently, he/she was more able to wait while watching what the teacher was doing. Now the child is able to play Jenga and other games, and engages in more leisure activities. In addition, he/she shows greater consideration of others, such as activity partners, in turn-based contexts. |
How to use |
1. The teacher and child pass a toothpick holder back and forth, taking a toothpick out each time. 2. Taking turns, each inserts their toothpick into a hole in a pictured train, marked by a white circle. 3. Repeat steps 1-2. |
