Target Elementary Department (6 to 11 year olds)
Children who tend to go on their own when moving from one place to another, instead of accompanying the teacher and friends.
Children who, both at school and at home, tend to be unable to accompany others or wait when they are told by the teacher or their parent to do so, and instead go off alone
Autistic children and/or those with intellectual disability
Disability category mentally challenged autism
Teaching units / Applicable scenes activities for independent living instruction for living skills
Specific purposes To enable children to:
--understand the rule requiring them to accompany the teacher and friends, and understand the necessity of following the rule
--follow the rule, through their experience of the Token Board
Considerations for disability characteristics Children are allowed to choose how they will go, so they can follow the rule on their own, instead of being forced to follow it.
‘Effort tokens’ are created, along with an ‘Effort award’, as visual means of giving them a sense of accomplishment in following the rule.
Expected effects and results The children choose “Going Together” when presented with the board, and are able to accompany friends to the lunch room each day.
Through the Token Board experience, including behavior evaluation and the granting of tokens and awards, they are also more able to perform other unfavored activities.
How to use 1. Children choose how they will go, either “Go Together” or “Go Alone”.
2. They receive an effort token if they are able to go together, and an effort award if they collect ten tokens.
