Target Students with intellectual disability who have difficulty in understanding the physical changes that occur with growth. The leaflets were used in health education at the Junior High and High School Divisions (12 to 17 years old).
Disability category mentally challenged
Teaching units / Applicable scenes physical education special activities
Specific purposes Students will be able to:
1. Care for their own bodies and develop the ability to manage their health
2. Understand the difference in physical growth between boys and girls and between individuals, and show consideration to others.
Considerations for disability characteristics This subject can be taught flexibly: PowerPoint (Microsoft, USA) can be used for group teaching and leaflets for individualized teaching. A teacher can teach their students focusing on important items that are matched to the students’ situations. Creation of leaflets enables any teacher to teach this subject.
Expected effects and results Students felt reassured to know that everyone experiences changes in the body and mind with growth. They also became able to ask about what they did not understand, not only to nursing teachers but also to same-sex adults at home and school.
How to use 1. These leaflets should be used as an introduction or a summary.
2. After group learning for health education, students review the materials several times at the levels of department and class. Distribute the leaflets to homes to improve shared understanding.
3. Individualized teaching suited to the physical growth of each student is necessary for students in the upper grades of the Elementary Division (10 - 11 years old).
