Target Infants, children and students having difficulty receiving visual acuity test with a pediatric eye chart with illustrations of objects especially because they cannot answer the name of the object and/or do not understand the intention of the test, which is to choose the same shape as the one shown
Disability category mentally challenged physically challenged autism multiple disabilities developmental disabilities other
Teaching units / Applicable scenes Japanese arithmetic, mathematics special activities activities for independent living other pre-school education
Specific purposes For assessing the visual acuity of children and students using shapes or symbols, they need to understand that “they are to look at the sample and choose the one with the same shape from the choices”. The following practices help them understand the intention:

3D shape matching game
- Look at the mold, find the piece of the same shape from the choices, and try to fit the piece into the mold

Shape matching cards
- Look at the sample card, find the shape that matches it from choices printed on transparent cards, and check the answer by overlaying the selected card on the sample card
Considerations for disability characteristics - Children and students can check their answers by the fitting the shape into the mold and seeing that the shapes on the cards match with each other. In such ways, they can understand the intension of finding the “same” shapes.
- The sample cards are to be shown placed on a framed board, and the transparent cards are made thick and to have rabbet edges that fits into the frame. This assures the cards being overlaid correctly and facilitates children and students realize “overlaying” (fitting).
Expected effects and results Practicing shape matching in stages, i.e. doing 3D shape matching game first and then playing shape matching cards, enables children and students understand the task of finding the same shape as the sample. This is expected to enable them to choose the card of the same shape as the one shown during a visual acuity test.
How to use 3D shape matching game
- Show a mold. Place several pieces of mutually different shapes near the learner (Photo 2). Ask the learner to find the piece of the same shape.
- Ask the learner to put the chosen piece into the mold and check that it fits.
Shape matching cards
- Place the sample card on the frame board. Place several transparent cards with different shapes printed near the learner. Ask the learner to find the shape that matches the sample.
- Ask the learner to put the chosen card on the frame so that it fits into the frame and check that the shapes are the same.

* In actual eyesight test, sample cards are presented several meters away from children and students. It is recommended that they practice focusing on a somewhat distant target.
* Before practicing shape matching using the molds and cards illustrating the shapes used for eyesight test (the shapes in the photos are several of the shapes used for eye test in Japan), it is highly recommended that they practice shape matching using shapes of more familiar objects in advance to transmit the intension of the task.
