---|---|
Disability category | mentally challenged autism |
Teaching units / Applicable scenes | Japanese |
Specific purposes |
The set consists of illustrated word cards and a board on which students can place cards to form a correct sentence. The set helps students acquire: - Knowledge and skills: Students choose the correct illustrated word card that matches the word spoken or a photo or illustration shown by a teacher. - Abilities to think, judge and express: Students choose two illustrated word cards and combine them so as to correctly express the content spoken or a photo or illustration shown by a teacher. |
Considerations for disability characteristics |
- The edges of word cards are colored differently depending on parts of speech to help students recognize them. - The board is equipped with hook-and-loop fasteners so that it is easy for students to change cards when they attempt to choose the correct cards and combine them to make a sentence and correct the cards by themselves when they make mistakes. - The number of cards presented to a student can be adjusted (increased) depending on his or her comprehension. Use more cards to increase the level. - Prepare larger-size (A5 size) word cards for classroom presentation using a white board, etc. |
Expected effects and results |
The set assists students who mostly use only one word to express themselves to speak in sentences by combining words such as a noun and a verb. In our school, repeated practice using the set has resulted in students, who could use only one word to express themselves such as “wash” for “I wash hands”, combine words and speak in two-word phrases, such as “wash hands”. (Such two-word phrases are grammatically correct sentences in Japanese, which does not require a subject in a sentence.) |
How to use |
1) Show a picture (photo or illustration) to students. 2) Ask students what is going on in the picture. 3) Students are to answer what’s going on using a verb. 4) Asks the students to combine two words on the syntax learning board and express what’s going on in the picture. |
