Children and students having difficulty in eye-hand coordination
Disability category mentally challenged physically challenged developmental disabilities
Teaching units / Applicable scenes technical arts and home economics activities for independent living learning for unit of work
Specific purposes The guide, which is made of thick paper and has a constant width, helps children and students:
- Press a hem having an aimed depth consistently from one end to the other.
Considerations for disability characteristics It is difficult to press a hem so as to have a consistent depth even the line to fold is precisely measured and drawn. The fold may go off the line, resulting in inconsistent depth. People with weak hand and finger strength may have difficulties pressing the hem slowly with an iron on one hand and holding the fold with the other hand. The guide helps stably pressing a hem at the desired fold line.
Expected effects and results The guide enables children and students press fabric along the desired fold lines and thus press hems of consistent depths. This frees them from correcting the position of the fold or fabric in the middle of pressing, helping them enjoy using the iron and feel self-confident.
How to use How to use Materials: 1) thick paper (cardstock, cardboard, drawing paper, etc.), 2) ruler, 3) pen, 4) scissors
Preparation:
1) On the paper, measure and draw lines at 1cm, 1.5cm and 2cm from a straight edge. Cut the paper along the lines. The paper strips serve as the guides.
2) On one end of each strip write the width of the guide, such as “1cm”, “1.5cm” and “2cm” using a permanent marker.
3) Fold the fabric over the guide, and press the fabric with the guide folded in.
*The activity involves using an iron. Pay attention to the safety of children and students so that they do not get a burn by watching the conditions of each individual.
*Remove the guide from the fabric after pressing.
*Adjust the width of the guide depending on task details.
*The strips can also be used for arithmetic, such as comparing lengths. In that case, laminating the paper before cutting makes a learning tool that is easy to use.
