Target Junior high school and high school students with hearing impairment
Disability category deaf and hard of hearing
Teaching units / Applicable scenes arithmetic, mathematics
Specific purposes Ideal on-demand learning videos aim to:
- Actualize flipped learning, which reduces the lecture time during class time and promotes active learning in groups of at least a certain size
- Deepen learning during class time
- Deepen learning based on textbooks
- Secure time for practices and
- Cultivate a habit of self-learning and self-study
all at the same time.
Considerations for disability characteristics - The videos explain the contents of the textbooks used at school and therefore help students study and learn by themselves using the textbooks.
- On the videos, the lectures also use sign language. (The lecturer on the video shown above needs to further practice the sign language.)
- The videos have subtitles, which are to be worked-out to enhance visual effects.
- It is possible to use graphs and diagrams of electronic textbooks for explanation. On the videos, students can better see the explanations, graphs, diagrams, etc., compared to face-to-face classes. Moreover, it is possible to use only the necessary contents, enabling teachers to give effective lessons.
- The videos prevent students from failing to obtain information because they can watch the videos many times.
Expected effects and results The videos enable teachers to design lessons assuming that students have prepared for the lessons and enable students to attend classes by already having an idea/opinion about the contents.
It is expected to result in shortening the lecture time at the beginning of a class and/or in students having better understanding even with the same lecture time. The videos also facilitate students discuss on an issue, encourage them to express their opinions and increase the duration of activities.
(Actual data suggested such effects. However, no significant differences to the control group were observed in semester exam scores.)
How to use 1. Distribute a lesson video to students and ask them to watch it at home to prepare for the class. (Alter the distribution method so as to fit the times.)
2-A. Ask students on points they did not understand by watching the video. Explain the points or ask a student who understood the points to explain them.
2-B. Watch the students, and switch the lesson to a lecture when necessary. The video is also useful for giving a lecture at the classroom.
3. Make the video so that students can watch as many times as they want so that they can review the lesson.
