Specific purposes The method, which involves using actual objects, picture cards, cards on which a certain number of symbols are drawn, number cards, etc., helps children understand numbers in connection with groups of objects and with numerals.
Considerations for disability characteristics ・ Various objects and cards (picture cards, cards on which certain numbers of circles are drawn and number cards) are used to help children understand cardinal numbers.
・ Children are to be taught in small steps by gradually increasing the numbers, such as up to 3 and then up to 5.
・ To compensate for low vision, picture cards were prepared so that the pictures can be understood by touching.
Expected effects and results The method assists children:
・ Count various objects correctly
・ Understand numbers up to 9 and read them
How to use ・ Children are to collect a specified number of objects, picture cards with the specified number of objects, cards with the specified number of symbols, and the cards that have the number written and put them on a white board.
・ Start the activity by counting actual objects.
・ Prepare two white boards. Put all cards on one. Ask children to move the specified number to the other.
Example:
(1) Say, “Let’s collect 2”.
(2) Count “2” using several kinds of objects.
(3) Ask children to choose picture cards that show 2 objects, cards that show 2 symbols and cards that show “2”.
(4) When the children have finished collecting, check that all objects, cards and number cards are “2”.
