Target ・The sixth grade of the elementary division
・Children who can write hiragana, but whose written characters are difficult for others to understand because of their distorted shape.
・Children who have difficulty speaking their thoughts to others in an audible manner for functional reasons.

Specific purposes ・To enable children to create a two-word sentence by combining cards illustrating a subject and a verb
・To enable children to communicate their own feelings and thoughts by using the illustrated cards
Considerations for disability characteristics ・To make it easy to choose and use the cards, business-sized cards with illustrations and hiragana on them are used.
・The illustrated cards are organized into one page for each topic (e.g. emotions, the weather, or study) for easy use.
Expected effects and results ・At first, children quickly chose only positive cards such as “happy” and “feeling good.” However, gradually, they began to take the time to look at each card and became able to choose cards that expressed negative feelings, such as “sad”, and multiple adjective cards.
How to use 1. The teacher asks the child questions such as “What feeling do you have now?” and “What’s today’s weather?” and the child turns to the appropriate page (e.g. emotions or weather).
2. From the opened page, the child selects the illustrated card that answers the question to express his/her thoughts.
Related teaching materials and information The illustrations for the teaching material were taken from Visual Symbols for Easy Communication: 1,000 useful symbols that help the daily lives of the challenged (with CD-ROM), Empowerment Kenkyujo.
