Disability category mentally challenged autism
Teaching units / Applicable scenes activities for independent living pre-school education
Specific purposes ・Children can practice putting cylindrical blocks into the box through a hole on the top.
・Children can work on their own because they can know the end of the task, which is 1) the block enters in the box and 2) there are not blocks left.
Considerations for disability characteristics ・To facilitate children know how many blocks are to be put into the box, three cylindrical blocks are placed in a row, from the front to the back, on the dominant hand side of each child.
・To prevent children from mouthing the blocks, the blocks were wrapped with single face corrugated sheets so that children can enjoy the feeling with hands.
・Blocks of different weights and those that contain bells, etc. were also prepared to encourage children feel interested in what they hold in their hands.
Expected effects and results ・In our school, children became able to complete the task by themselves and return the boxes on the shelves even without teacher’s instruction.
How to use Ask children to:
1. Put the three blocks that are aligned in a row from the front to the back into the box, and
2. When they finish putting in the three blocks, return the basket that contains the box on the shelf so that the correct side faces outward.
