Specific purposes | In conventional volleyball the ball can easily fall to the ground; only those students who are good at volleyball can play an active part in the game, and not all children are able to enjoy the game’s characteristics. For this reason, at the Special Needs Education School for the Mentally Challenged, University of Tsukuba, we use a balloon to play volleyball so that children can put their best efforts into playing the game and can learn the fun of competition that decides the winner and loser, as well as feeling the pleasure of cooperation with their teammates. |
Considerations for disability characteristics |
Special characteristics of the teaching material・ Consider the students’ reality and choose a balloon of a size that is the most comfortable for the children to handle. (At our School we use a 90-cm balloon, but the same company also sells balloons in 60 cm, 120 cm, and other sizes.) ・ Consider the students’ reality and decide on the number of touches allowed, the court size, and other rules. (At our School, the students are allowed to touch the balloon as many times as needed. As long as the balloon is on the same side of the court, anybody and everybody can touch the balloon as necessary. Even the same person can touch the balloon in succession.) Expected effects and results Because the balloon falls very slowly, the students were seen to actively participate in the game, trying to touch the ball. Changing the size of the ball, the court, and other rules in relation to the students’ reality enables a wide range of students to participate in the game. |

How to use |
(Rules used at the Special Needs Education School for the Mentally Challenged, University of Tsukuba) ・ Set the net height at 155 cm (the height of a badminton net). ・ Create two teams, red and white, and play the rock, paper, and scissors game to decide the team that serves the first game. (The team that serves changes for each game by taking turns. For example, if player 1 on the red team serves in the first game → player 1 on the white team serves in the next game → then player 2 in the red team serves → then player 2 in the white team serves → and so on in order.) ・ To start the game, the server serves the ball from the front of the court, aiming for the opponent’s court. ・ Anybody on the same side of the court as the balloon can touch it as many times as necessary. Cooperate as a team to send the ball over to the opponent’s side. ・ If the ball hits the ground before crossing the net, the opponent scores. If the ball falls outside the lines of the opponent’s court, the opponent also scores. ・ When time is up, the game ends and the team with the highest score wins. |
Related teaching materials and information | We also play other sports using balloons, including balloon badminton, balloon golf, and many more. The balloon we use is a 90-cm Hi-Delight Super Round Balloon (Excel Point Inc.) |
