Target A child in the sixth grade of the elementary department who:
• was able to count numbers from 1 to 500 by looking at them
• could take all the coins out of his purse at the cash register during shopping lessons
• was able to understand the monetary value of coins
Disability category mentally challenged autism
Teaching units / Applicable scenes arithmetic, mathematics
Specific purposes To enable the child to:
• pay the exact amount of money by combining coins, keeping positional notation (i.e., the ones place, the tens place, and the hundreds place) in mind
• generalize the act of paying money in an actual payment situation such as shopping
Considerations for disability characteristics • The child’s favorite items (such as sweets for a snack and fares for a field trip) were used as subjects.
• To enable him to understand positional notation, I prepared trays with vertical rows and made him put the coins in each row of the tray according to the denomination of each coin.
• Slides on a tablet terminal were used to enable the child easily to confirm the correct answers.
Expected effects and results • The child can now pay the exact amount of money presented.
• When being told the bus fare during field trips, he is now able to take out the exact amount of money from his purse.
