Disability category | mentally challenged |
Teaching units / Applicable scenes | Japanese activities for independent living |
Specific purposes |
To enable the child to: • respond to simple spoken words from others (listening) • relate his experiences and situation by using three-word sentences (speaking) |
Considerations for disability characteristics |
• I installed and used playground equipment that interested the child, such as a bicycle and a swing, on the conventional planar diorama to increase his vocabulary. • After simulation play by using the diorama, a worksheet was used to write three-word sentences to deepen the child’s understanding |
Expected effects and results | • Installation of playground equipment on the diorama has enabled the child to speak sentences containing multiple word classes, such as “The owl sits on the bike. I ride the bike.” |
How to use |
1. Reproduce the animal’s movement. • After listening to the sentence, for example, “The monkey climbs a tree,” a child reproduces the animal’s movement by using an animal figure and the diorama. 2. Describe the animal’s movement. • In response to the teacher’s question, “What are they doing?” the child uses a three-word sentence to describe the animal’s movement in terms of the scenario in the diorama. |
