Target A child in the second grade of the elementary division who:
• had sufficient vocabulary to express himself and understand others and was able to communicate and enjoy using words
• was able to read and understand picture books and short sentences
• had difficulty writing (even by copying the text) and had little interest in constructive activities such as writing, drawing, playing with puzzles, and doing craftwork

Specific purposes To enable the child to:
• understand the connection between puzzle pieces
• imagine the whole image from each puzzle piece
• complete the puzzle
Considerations for disability characteristics • The shape, number, and size of the puzzle pieces were changed to adjust the level of difficulty to suit the child.
• The child’s favorite illustrations were selected to encourage the child to enjoy the puzzle.
Expected effects and results • The child was able to assemble a puzzle by himself.
• The child will become interested in and enjoy other similar constructive activities such as doing other puzzles, drawing, and writing.
How to use 1. Place puzzle pieces near the child with the illustrated sides facing up.
2. Place a puzzle frame in front of the child.
3. Urge the child to complete the puzzle.
Note: Provide the following support, according to the child’s achievement levels:
• The teacher fits some puzzle pieces into the frame in advance.
• The teacher tells the child about the completed puzzle image and the location of each piece in the completed puzzle.
• When the child seems to have trouble solving the puzzle, the teacher helps the child to complete the puzzle, thus giving the child the opportunity to learn and gain a sense of achievement.
