Name of teaching material
Target | Younger and older children who have difficulties breathing and poor muscle strength. (Elementary, lower secondary, and upper secondary education stages) |
---|---|
Disability category | physically challenged |
Teaching units / Applicable scenes | activities for independent living |
Specific purposes |
To enable younger and older children to: 〇 breathe in deeply and breathe out heavily for a long time ◯ move their whole bodies by playing with paper balloons ◯ take a deep breath and move their whole bodies by using the paper balloons |
Considerations for disability characteristics | ・The size of the balloon is to be chosen to suit the child’s physical condition. |
Expected effects and results | ・A paper balloon is easier to inflate than a rubber balloon; thus children actively engaged themselves in inflating paper balloons. The activity elicited voluntary exercises of a desired physical movement (such as repeated deep breathing). |
How to use |
・To motivate children, set the aim not at inflating a paper balloon but at playing with the inflated balloon. ・Before inflating a balloon, let children predict how many breaths they need to inflate it and how long they can breathe into the balloon in one breath so that they better enjoy the activity. It would be a good exercise adequate to each individual child. ・After inflating the balloon, let the children get from their wheelchairs to the floor and play balloon volleyball. This involves full body exercises beneficial to the needs of each individual child. |
