Name of teaching material
Target | Infants with intellectual disabilities (from 3 to 5 year-olds in the kindergarten division) |
---|---|
Disability category | mentally challenged |
Teaching units / Applicable scenes | instruction for living skills pre-school education |
Specific purposes |
To enable the infants to: 1. understand the daily schedule and look forward to the day 2. confirm the schedule at a meeting and participate in the next activity (e.g. scheduled childcare) with a sense of expectation |
Considerations for disability characteristics | The use of visual clues, such as numbers showing the order, arrows (→), pictures (photos), and letter cards, enables the infants easily to understand the content and order of activities and to look forward to them. |
Expected effects and results | The schedule board was used effectively; infants voluntarily moved and installed the board to confirm the schedule and shared the flow of activities and expectations with their peers. |
How to use |
1. The cards (attached to the board or removed and placed into the pocket on the back of the board [see photo at right]) all have magnetic backs. The cards are of a size and thickness that make them easy for infants to handle. 2. Both legs of the board are equipped with casters. The board itself, or a rope-like handle, is held to move the board. The board can be moved by one or two infants. |
Related teaching materials and information | • The schedule board makes it easy to visually understand the flow (order and content) of activities. In addition, it enables children to share roles and cooperate with their peers to move forward in group activities, thus improving their expectations of activities and their motivation, independence, and friendships. |
