Target Children with intellectual disability (Young children, older children, and students who need to become able to move their bodies in coordination with someone else’s movement. In class, grade 1 to 6 students were paired and used this teaching material.)
Disability category mentally challenged
Teaching units / Applicable scenes activities for independent living instruction of play life unit learning
Specific purposes 1. To cooperate (coordinate movement) with a partner to expand the hair elastic and pick up a ball with it.
2. To coordinate movements with the partner’s to carry the ball.
3. To cooperate by coordinating movements with the partner’s and drop the ball into the basket.
Considerations for disability characteristics A characteristic of this teaching material is that it needs at least two people to complete the task because to expand the hair elastic it needs to be pulled by four pieces of string. The teacher is to provide incremental help according to the needs of each child. For example, the teacher can 1) provide direct help by giving the child a hand (physical assistance); 2) play the role of a partner and demonstrate how the child should move (presentation of a model); or 3) give verbal advice (verbal instructions). The teacher is to gradually refrain from offering help and encourage the children to cooperate and coordinate their movements on their own.
Expected effects and results The size to which the hair elastic needs to be expanded differs and must be adjusted for each ball depending on its material, shape, size, and other factors. For this reason, the children were seen to adjust their movements in relation to their partners’ movements when picking up or dropping the ball. In addition, because this activity involves the movements of squatting and standing, positive effects in terms of physical exercise can be expected.
How to use 1. Four pieces of plastic string, each roughly 15 to 30 cm long, are tied to the hair elastic to make this teaching material.
2. a) Hold a piece of string in each hand and pull to expand the hair elastic. b) Put the ball inside the expanded hair elastic to hold the ball. (It will be easier to put the ball inside the expanded elastic when one person pulls the elastic horizontally, with one hand pulling to the left and the other hand pulling to the right, and the other person pulls it vertically towards themselves to form a triangle.)
3. Walk towards the basket by adjusting your movement to your partner’s movement.
4. a) Pull the string held in each hand when the ball is above the basket to expand the hair elastic. b) Drop the ball into the basket. c) Make eye contact with your partner and confirm your success. (“Hurray! We did it!”)
Related teaching materials and information The teaching material is created by tying four pieces of plastic strings to four points of the circumference of the hair elastic. In response to the child’s needs, the length of the strings can be changed and a handle can even be attached to each string as necessary. Various types of balls of different materials, shapes, sizes, and colors can be prepared so that the children can discuss between themselves whether to choose the ball that is easiest to pick up. On the other hand, different scores can be given to different balls as a way of learning arithmetic. The balls used in the present activity included bumpy balls that looked like sea urchins and balls used in a ball tossing game, in addition to ordinary air-filled balls.
For your information, a product called a bumpy exercise ball (Ikeda Kougyo Sha; http://www.yamaine-ikeda.co.jp/kids_details6-525.html?PHPSESSID=89fd2ba39f42d93f17d50aa366055c4c) is sold on the market, but basically, all materials can be purchased at a 100-Yen Shop or similar stores.
