Target ・ Elementary division
・ Children who can understand picture cards and gesture signs to some degree, but have difficulty understanding words
・ Children who are having difficulty playing together with other children in activities that require coordination of movements and cooperation with other children
Disability category mentally challenged autism
Teaching units / Applicable scenes activities for independent living instruction of play
Specific purposes ・ When playing in pairs, the children will become able to take turns to stand up or sit down in accordance with their partners’ movements.
・ The children will become able to focus on the movement of the basket on the imaginary ropeway.
・ The children will become able to enjoy watching the movement of the ropeway.
Considerations for disability characteristics ・To make it possible, even for those children who have difficulty understanding words, to somewhat understand what they need to do by just looking, only simple tools and movements are used.
・Irrelevant and unnecessary visual information (stimulation) is minimized to make it much easier to catch the children’s attention, generate their interest, and promote their understanding.
Expected effects and results ・The children began to enjoy watching the fast-moving basket.
・The children gradually began to understand their roles in the pair.
(He/she had to stand up to send the basket to the partner and then he/she had to sit down to have the basket sent from the partner.)
・The children began to be able to act smoothly when encouraged by the teacher. (Even just a small amount of encouragement was enough.)
How to use 1. The teachers perform a demonstration.
2. Two children are paired, and each child holds the end of a vinyl chloride pipe.
3. One of the two children stands up and holds the vinyl chloride pipe high up in the air.
4. The basket is delivered to the other child.
5. The child who was standing up sits down.
6. The child who was sitting down now stands up and sends the basket to the other child.
7. Pairs are changed and the above movements repeated.
Related teaching materials and information ・Teaching materials: two vinyl chloride pipes and a basket (can be purchased at a 100-yen shop)
Note: If a rope is used instead, it is difficult to keep the rope straight and fast-paced movement of the basket cannot be achieved.
・Method of fabrication: Vinyl chloride pipes with joints were used to enable length adjustment (maximum 4 m).
・The children’s motivation to participate in the activity may be further increased by changing the object placed inside the basket and sent to the partner (for example, to the receiving partner’s favorite toy).
・The activity may be more widely adopted as a game by changing the setup and rules: for example, by creating two sets of this teaching material and making it a team competition.
・Because the children will be able to understand that it requires two people to hold the end of the object for a successful activity, this understanding can be expected to be of help in doing other activities (for example, carrying and organizing benches and other objects, or sports games in physical education classes).
・By making appropriate alterations to this teaching material, it may be used as a game activity (interaction) among children, irrespective of whether they have or do not have disabilities.
