Target Children with hearing impairments (utilized at junior high school level, but intended for older elementary school students)
Disability category deaf and hard of hearing
Teaching units / Applicable scenes social studies
Specific purposes To help children read topographical maps and become comfortable with maps. To cultivate spatial awareness. By teaching children how to read topographical maps, they become more familiarized with maps. Being able to read maps contributes to better spatial awareness.
Considerations for disability characteristics Maps are useful visual aids in teaching; however, in order to use them, children must first be taught how to read them. These map reading cards have been created as a resource for teaching children to read maps. They enable children to visually interpret maps quickly and accurately. When using a map, the cards are placed on it to enable children to understand topographical features as they work to interpret the map.
Expected effects and results Familiarization with map reading and greater spatial awareness.
How to use When looking at a map, first direct the children's attention to the direction and position (i.e., where on the map). With a wall map, teach the children that height differences are represented in different colors, such as brown for mountains, green for plains and blue for rivers, and show this using cards with color-specific lettering. Most students will understand the picture shown at left, but for students who have difficulty with shape discrimination, sorting the groups by color alone as shown in the picture at right will make it easier to understand. Usage should be adapted for each situation.
Related teaching materials and information Comprehension via visual information can be used to help students gain a clear understanding about the locations of the countries they are currently learning about. By placing a piece of colored paper cut into the shape of the target country onto a wall map, it will make it easier for students to understand the location and shape of the country.
