Specific purposes To learn to recognize Braille shapes.
The time required to teach tactile reading of Braille will depend upon the age and finger sensitivity of the learner. It ultimately takes a great deal of time and patient instruction to enable a learner to read text, etc., on paper or pin displays, as mastering tactile reading is a far more difficult task than learning to write Braille. Learners begin by touching dot diagrams and patterns, allowing them to start experiencing the world through Braille, and move on to line drawing and other basic instruction. Following this, learners move on to letters and characters; however, for those who have difficulty recognizing point positioning and character shape, this teaching material is an effective aid in learning.
Considerations for disability characteristics This braille model teaching aid has six points arranged in a braille character-sized grouping on a rectangular board, with each point able to be pushed out from back to front. This fact, combined with the clear spacing and height differences, make it a useful teaching aid.
Expected effects and results This instructional model aid can enable older learners and others with a poor finger sensitivity to clearly understand via touch. It can also be used to introduce a sense of fun and play to invigorate and accelerate lessons which have become boring or tiring.
How to use ・The instructor presses the bumps into the desired braille character shape and lets learner feel it.
・This can be put to effective use prior to introducing a character written on paper.
・Because the feeling of this practice board and actual paper are completely different, this board should not be used excessively for instruction.
・After the learner recognizes the positional relationship of the bumps, instruction should then be provided using actual paper.
