Target Young children (3 year olds, kindergarten level)
Disability category deaf and hard of hearing
Teaching units / Applicable scenes activities for independent living instruction of play other
Specific purposes To let children enjoy interaction with their teachers by looking at a picture book and recreating a scene.
Considerations for disability characteristics The book used for this example is The Three Billy Goats Gruff (published by Fukuinkan Shoten; based on a Norwegian fairy tale; illustrated by Marcia Brown; translated by Teiji Seta).
The interaction of the goats and the troll in the story utilizes a repeating pattern. Because of this repeating pattern, even children with hearing impairments are able to predict the direction of the narrative, allowing them to follow along and form an image in their head which allows them to partake in the scene recreation play.
Also, the fearsome troll character allows children to engage with "fear" together with their teacher.
Expected effects and results Because the picture book is repetitive, it allows children to predict the story developments as the repetitions continue. As the children learn to anticipate story developments, they start thinking, "I'll bet such-and-such will happen next," and "I knew it," as they follow along. This allows the children to experience the joy of picture books.
When it comes time to recreate the story through play, the children have heard the same lines over and over, enabling the children playing the goats to understand what their teacher is saying as the troll and feeling that they communicated their message in turn. This allows the children to experience the fun of interaction.
How to use When reading the picture book, the teacher reads the troll's lines with great feeling in order to clearly convey the goats' fear of the troll.
If paper puppets or masks are used to recreate the story through play, the teacher should play the role of the troll and say his lines expressively to enliven the exchange of lines between the children and the teacher.
