Name of teaching material
Target |
Blind or partially sighted children at the age-appropriate grade level Elementary, Lower Secondary, and Upper Secondary Departments (6 to 17 year olds) |
---|---|
Disability category | visual impairment |
Teaching units / Applicable scenes | arithmetic, mathematics |
Specific purposes |
To enable children to: --draw line segments --measure lengths |
Considerations for disability characteristics |
The ruler ends are reduced to make it easier for children to place the ruler on objects. Since 1-mm increments are difficult to read with the fingers, the ruler is marked with 5-mm increments, which are the smallest scale division that can be easily read with the fingers. A small notch is provided every 5 mm. An easy-to-see display is added to the ruler, for partially sighted children. |
Expected effects and results |
Children are able to measure the length of line segments, and confirm the measurements with their hands. Children are able to draw line segments of specific lengths. |
How to use |
[Drawing a line segment] Draw a line with a ballpoint pen or pencil along the ruler. A line segment of a specific length can be drawn using the notches spaced at 5 mm on the ruler. [Measuring a length] Align “0” on the ruler with one end of the object. Check the point on the ruler that corresponds to the other end of the object. Read the length on the ruler. |
