Disability category | mentally challenged autism |
Teaching units / Applicable scenes | activities for independent living instruction of play |
Specific purposes | Children are able to practice blowing air out in a fun way. |
Considerations for disability characteristics |
The exercise aims to enable children to understand the purpose and result of blowing air out, and enjoy doing so. Before the child attempts to ‘blow out’ a (paper) candle, the teacher demonstrates how to properly purse the lips and blow air out, and the child thoroughly practices pursing the lips while looking in a mirror. |
Expected effects and results |
In attempting to blow the paper candle into a target hole, the child tried blowing air out strongly and weakly, to control the amount of air blown out. After singing ‘Happy Birthday’ together with the child, the teacher told him/her to blow out the paper candle. When the candle fell, the child clapped his/her hands, enjoying the blowing out. |
How to use |
Position a paper candle near an illustrated candle on the lid of a half-open cake box. The teacher says “Fu!” and the child ‘blows out’ the candle. This is repeated until the candle falls into the box. When the candle falls into the box, the teacher applauds to show the child he/she has done well. |

◯Preparation Prepare a box in the shape of a cake. Cut out half the lid of the box, and prepare a folded piece of paper with a vertical candle image. Adjust the paper fold to make it easy for a child in the early stages of development to perform the task (e.g., fold it so it falls easily). After the child learns how to control breathing out, adjust the size and weight of the paper candle appropriately. This can be managed as an independent activity if performed in the classroom. |
