Target Students with total blindness, who obtain information on their surroundings via their sense of touch and hearing
(≥ 12 years old).
Disability category visual impairment
Teaching units / Applicable scenes activities for independent living
Specific purposes (1) Students will be able to understand the overall structure of an intersection using this model and learn about the association between the switching of traffic lights and traffic flow, and the use of pedestrian crossings.
(2) To recognize the green light allowing pedestrians to cross using senses other than vision, students will be able to sense the green light by changes in the sounds they hear, while standing on the sidewalk.
Considerations for disability characteristics Students cannot recognize real intersections by touch; therefore, a 30 cm square intersection model was created to enable them to understand the structure of an intersection in this way. Traffic lights can be removed to discern the configuration of the intersection.
Expected effects and results Students will be able to understand the clues obtained from the structure of an intersection for safe crossing.
How to use Before crossing a real intersection, students learn that people drive on the left side of the road and obtain clues to cross the intersection other than vision, such as the switching cycle of traffic lights and sounds of moving traffic by using this model, and create a clear mental image of the intersection. It is desirable to learn by associating the model with a real intersection, for example, by likening a miniature car to a real car and the finger to a person.
