Name of teaching material
Target | Children with visual impairment who study school subjects (≥ 7 years old) |
---|---|
Disability category | visual impairment |
Teaching units / Applicable scenes | arithmetic, mathematics |
Specific purposes |
Children will be able to: • understand that two-dimensional shapes consist of sides • understand that a vertex is a point where two sides meet • understand that a combination of rods of different lengths can make different shapes • become familiar with and improve understanding of shapes while moving and combining rods to make different shapes |
Considerations for disability characteristics | The use of a magnetic sheet as a mat prevents rods from sliding, making it easier for children to make shapes with them. |
Expected effects and results | Children will develop an interest in and improve their understanding of shapes by using their hands to make them. |
How to use |
• The acrylic rods used form the shape of a triangular prism. There are two types of rods: the length of a side of the cross section of 3 mm and 5 mm, which allows users to select rods best suited to the purpose and children’s condition. • To make it easier to recognize the point at which two rods meet as a vertex, both ends of each rod are cut diagonally. • To make it easy for children with amblyopia (reduced vision) to recognize the rods, easily visible colored paper can be placed between the acrylic rods and the magnetic sheet, or the magnetic sheet can be colored. |
