Name of teaching material
Target | Students with visual impairment (Physical Therapy Course, part of the Advanced Vocational Course) (≥ 18 years old) |
---|---|
Disability category | visual impairment |
Teaching units / Applicable scenes | other acupuncture, moxibustion, manual therapy |
Specific purposes |
Students will be able to correctly measure: • the insertion angle of an acupuncture needle • the insertion depth of an acupuncture needle. |
Considerations for disability characteristics |
• Accurate angle and depth are important and necessary skills in acupuncture needle insertion. This is because acupuncture on the back at the wrong angle or depth may cause an accident such as pneumothorax. Students must therefore obtain the correct sense of angle and depth before clinical practice with real patients. • This ruler was made in the shape of a right triangle to measure the frequently used angles of 30°, 60°, and 90°, which will enable students to obtain a correct sense of insertion angle. The vertices of the ruler are also rounded for safety. • A small cut is made at a location 2.5 cm from each vertex, which will enable students to acquire the sense of depth when half of the 5-cm needle is inserted. These cuts make it easier for students with low vision (amblyopia) or total blindness to check the needle’s depth by touching it with their fingers. Owing to the very simple structure of the ruler, teachers can make as many rulers as necessary for all the students. |
Expected effects and results | The ruler is pocket-sized, so that students can carry it with them and measure the angle and depth of the needle whenever necessary. This will enable students to learn correct acupuncture skills. |
How to use |
(1) Insert the needle at the designated angle and depth. (2) Before use, disinfect the ruler with an alcohol cotton swab. (The plastic ruler can be disinfected before use.) (3) Attach the ruler to the inserted needle to measure the angel and depth of the needle. (4) Evaluate the student’s performance. |
