Specific purposes Learning to appreciate art plays an extremely important role in art teaching. Children need this appreciation to connect creative motivation—which itself is evoked by an appreciation of the goodness and beauty of a work—to creative and subjective expression. In class, it is important for students not only to summarize their own impressions in words, but also to present them in front of other students and to exchange opinions with each other. The students use words to express the relationship between the work and themselves and reinforce and refine their own thoughts through various feelings and opinions. Through such processes, students can clearly form an awareness of their expressive activities and the path to creation. I produced this teaching material to promote art appreciation learning in a smooth manner and to enable students to understand the learning content.
Considerations for disability characteristics At the Special Needs Education School for the Deaf at the University of Tsukuba (School for the Deaf) the language proficiency of the students varies, making it difficult to deepen the art appreciation learning of all the students.
“Software for art appreciation by using students’ work—Enjoyable Art” is a supplementary teaching material for art appreciation learning. It was developed to solve problems at our school by using a visual teaching method. The reading of written comments presented with images of the work and explanations of art terms supplements the students’ language proficiency. This helps to enhance smooth progress in the student’s learning of art appreciation and increases the students’ understanding of the learning content.
