Name of teaching material
Target | Students in the upper secondary division |
---|---|
Disability category | deaf and hard of hearing |
Teaching units / Applicable scenes | foreign languages |
Specific purposes | To provide hearing-impaired students with an alternative to English listening lessons so that they can develop skills to instantly understand transcribed verbal English. |
Considerations for disability characteristics | When students with hearing impairment try to understand voices in foreign languages, it is difficult for them not only to listen to the voice from a CD and a tape recorder, but also to read the speech. In this teaching material, voices on the audio material were transcribed; the transcripts appear, shift, and disappear on the screen, moving from right to left. This enables the students to understand the content of the teaching material to the extent that those without hearing impairment instantly understand verbal English. |
Expected effects and results | This teaching material helps students with hearing impairment to acquire the skills to instantly understand English transcribed from verbal English. |
How to use |
Use the animation features of the presentation creation software. When using Microsoft PowerPoint, enter the English text in the horizontal text box and apply the animation to it. To create the slide animation, make sure you start the slide-out (to the left) after the slide-in (from the right). Adjust the duration of the slide-in and slide-out and modulate the speed at which the transcripts flow to suit the students’ proficiency. When using conversational-style listening materials, allocate a different color to each speaker. |
