Target Children with hearing impairment who can learn subjects (elementary division)
Disability category deaf and hard of hearing
Teaching units / Applicable scenes arithmetic, mathematics
Specific purposes To enable children in the first grade of the elementary division to:
• express the location of the designated drawer by using numbers: for example, the drawer is in the second column from the right and the third row from the top
• indicate the drawer that corresponds to the position indicated on a question card: for example, the drawer is in the second column from the right and the third row from the top
• understand ordinal and cardinal numbers.
Considerations for disability characteristics • After indicating the drawer, the child opens it and finds out what is inside. The drawers are very colorful: because the children’s favorite items are placed inside, they are interested in and enjoy repeating this activity, like playing a game.
• The use of cards, on each of which a question is written, helps the children visually to understand the question.
• This teaching material can be used for both mass teaching and personal teaching.
Expected effects and results • Children enjoy themselves while expressing the position of a drawer by using numbers.
• The roles of questioner and answerer can be easily changed, and the questions can be presented in a variety of ways.
How to use • Use the three-drawer containers available at 100 yen shops and stick them together with double-faced tape. Change the number of containers to suit the child and the difficulty of learning.
• Put the children’s favorite items, such as magnets and ohajiki (flattened, lozenge-shaped marbles), in a drawer. (Items can be put into multiple drawers, depending on the situation.)
• For personal teaching, put items such as stickers in the drawer; the teacher can give the child a sticker as a reward when the child answers correctly.
